The Making of a Recruiter
Recruiting - Art or Science? What makes a successful Recruiter Latest! Interviews may not be accurate measure of predictive personality factors Year 2000 research from Michigan & Iowa Universities investigates whether interviewers can assess key personality traits during a job interviews. Four raters (self, interviewer, friend, and stranger) assessed 73 applicant's personalities. Results demonstrated interviewer ratings of an applicant’s personality correlate higher with self-ratings than do a stranger’s ratings but less than ratings from close friends. However, correlations between interviewer ratings and self-ratings were smaller for the two job-relevant personality traits, Conscientiousness and Emotional Stability than for the other three personality traits (Openness, Agreeableness & Extraversion). Variance in these ratings suggested that applicants managed their self-presentation on these two traits during the interview. Thus, although interviewers can and do assess personality during the interview, they are not able to assess those traits that would best predict later job success. Finally, the effect of various interviews formats was assessed. The results revealed that job-relevant interviews, situational interviews, and behavioral interviews did not affect an interviewer's ability to assess personality.

The ideal recruiter
is born not made. Whilst we would like to know that maybe
it is otherwise, a strong body of evidence suggests that it
is the interplay of eleven personality factors, plus an intelligence
threshold that is the elixir of success."
